❤️HER NAME IS QIONG YAN!❤️

Her name is Qiong Yan. The media call her everything but her name.
Qiong was murdered in September of 2020 at Hamilton, Qld. Her body was found six months later.
The killer has just been convicted and sentenced to life in jail.
He claimed Qiong died after consuming nitrous oxide willingly. He bashed and strangled her to death.
He bought a large tool box and hid her in it.
He used her phone to message Qiong’s mum and friends pretending she was alive.
He stole Qiong’s money, car, and other possessions.
Media repeatedly turned Qiong into a ‘body box’, a toolbox or just a body.
Reporters forgot to use not only Qiong’s name – they forgot the word MURDER – often replacing it with DEATH.
Murder and death are not interchangeable.

Many headlines were framed around the male having sex nearby to Qiong’s body.
The New York Post even trivialised the killer by labelling him a ‘not-so-talented’ Mr Ripley (Mr Ripley is a book character who murders people and assumes their lives – not something anyone should trivialise)!
Dehumanising women has long been the approach of media.
They do this because they know people want YOU to read their product.
Erasing women from stories about their killings feeds into the system that allows violent men to continue to harm women.
It also implies she is responsible in some way for her own murder.
The sad thing is – most people who read stories about murder are women. So it is really up to us to say no more and stop consuming stories that are not trauma-informed, ethical or victim-focused.
For any journalists wanting to know how to report on the murder of women appropriately, I offer pro bono training in this area.
