Sana Yousaf stood up for girls and women.
She stood up for equality.
She stood up for herself.
She stood up for the right to say ‘no’.
After stalking and harassing her relentlessly, a young male went to her home in Pakistan and fired multiple bullets into Sana’s body. She died in front of her mum and her aunt.
He could not handle rejection.
Sana – an immensely popular influencer – used her platform to advocate for women’s rights and equality.
Some journalists say he was her lover (he was not) and many used ‘honour killing’ headlines.
‘Honour killing’ describes the murder of a woman by a male who deems her to have dishonoured the family.
This is some patriarchal bullshit.

There is no such thing as ‘honour killings’ – they are simply a form of extreme control over a woman’s body, mind and her life.
Either way, women cannot win.
If we ‘dishonour’ men, we can be killed.
If we reject men, we can be killed.
From childhood, Sana understood the importance of women’s rights. Her mum is a social worker and an activist.
The teen used social media to spread messages of equality with her trademark style of movement, colour and fashion.
In the wake of Sana’s murder, Pakistani mental health services are facing an influx in calls for help from desperate young women who are enduring stalking, harassment and bullying by young men online.
UN Women reports around 60% of females across the globe experience digital abuse and technology-facilitated violence.
Sana had every right to feel safe online and in real life. She had every right to say no.
Saying no should never be a death sentence.
She was only 17.
