Marianne Bachmeier loved her daughter beyond measure.
She would do anything to keep her safe. She did the unthinkable in the wake of her death.
Anna Bachmeier was abducted, raped and murdered by Klaus Grabowski in Lübeck, Germany.
She was only seven.
Life was tough for Marianne and Anna but their bond was unbreakable.
Marianne was raising little Anna by herself and running a hotel to make ends meet.
Marianne’s father was a member of the Waffen-SS – a Nazi organisation.
She was raped repeatedly by different men throughout her childhood and teens.
Marianne had to give first two children up for adoption before she turned 19.
She gave birth to Anna in 1973 and decided to raise her the best she could.

Anna was walking to school when Grabowski grabbed her. He held her in his unit for hours, subjecting her to horrific violence. Then he strangled her to death.
He buried her and went to the pub.
A convicted sex offender, he was quickly arrested.
Grabowski claimed Anna seduced him and was blackmailing him for cash.
On day three of the killer’s trial, Marianne hid a loaded pistol in her handbag and entered the courtroom.
She fired eight bullets at him. Seven of them hit Grabowski. He died immediately.
“He killed my daughter,” she said as she dropped the gun. “I wanted to shoot him in the face, but I shot him in the back. I hope he’s dead.”
Marianne was charged with murder, saying she was in a ‘dream’ and she saw her daughter as she shot the killer.
Experts say she must have had training to shoot the weapon, such was her accuracy. They say the killing was planned and premeditated.
The media dubbed Marianne ‘Revenge Mum’ and people across the globe pressured for her to be acquitted. She was not seen as a vigilante but as a desperate mother righting a wrong.
She was convicted of premeditated manslaughter, serving three years in jail.
A movie was made about her and she moved to Nigeria, married and divorced.
Marianne died from cancer on September 17, 1996. She now lies next to Anna.
