A man asked a woman at the bus stop: “How’s your daughter?”.
Then he walked into a local bar and ordered a drink.
The woman went to a service station, bought petrol and returned to the bar.
She poured the fuel over him and set it alight.
He would never harm her daughter again.
María del Carmen García killed Antonio Cosme in June of 2005 – some seven years after he violated 13-year-old Veronica in Spain. Cosme was Maria and Veronica’s neighbour. He held Veronica at knifepoint to violate and assault her. He was also a man who had some standing in the local community.

When Veronica and Maria went to the police – in a tale as old as rape – many people fully supported him.
It took all of Maria’s mental strength to fight for justice for Veronica and eventually she had a win – he was sentenced to nine years in prison but paroled after seven years.
It took all of Maria’s mental strength to fight for justice for Veronica and eventually she had a win – he was sentenced to nine years in prison. He was on day release when he taunted Maria.
Maria was convicted of murder and sentenced to 9.5 years in jail.
People across the country joined forces to fight for her freedom, believing she was within her rights as a parent to protect her child and that she ‘did the world a service’.
Her sentence was reduced to 5.5 years, with the court citing her clean criminal record and that she was ‘experiencing temporary insanity’ when she committed the crime. Maria’s request for a pardon was dismissed and she went back to jail.
“I never wanted to be a killer,” she says. “But I imagined what would happen if he ever got near my daughter again.”
