In these last few minutes with her precious bub, authorities plotted a devastating move that took years to reverse.
Talon was only 8.5 months old when she suffered critical injuries at her home in Frankston on June 20, 2019. She died that evening in hospital, surrounded by her family and cradled by her mum Kayla Hehir.
Kayla, with her father Tony, joins me on this week’s episode of the SHE MATTERS Podcast to tell Talon’s story.
Police and Child Protection investigated from the onset, with the Homicide Squad now having had carriage of her file for more than six years.
Kayla was quickly ruled out as a suspect. Detectives made this clear. But the Department of Human Services ignored the police and swooped, taking Talon’s siblings into care without telling her mum.
“I was court ordered to see them for an hour,” Kayla says.
“The only reason I was allowed to see them for that hour was to tell them their sister was dead.”

“DHS were lying to the courts and saying I was a suspect in my daughter’s homicide, even though I was never listed as one. I was treated like shit. I jumped through every hoop. I asked for every support. I asked them if I’m failing as a parent, educate me.
“They took my 10-hour-old baby off me a year after my daughter was murdered and handed her to a woman and a man I didn’t even fucking know. I had to wonder every day if my daughter was going to end up fucking dead because she was with a strange man.”
Kayla was deprived of her children for many years, and the situation was only rectified when her case went before a court and police told the magistrate she was never a suspect.
Kayla has been petitioning for an inquest to be held into Talon’s death – the Victorian Attorney-General, the Domestic Violence Minister and the Police Minister refuse to speak to her.
