Around the half-way mark of their story on AB – an Iranian refugee – and his actions at Bondi Beach on December 14, journalists Josh Robertson and Maddison Connaughton finally tell you exactly why this guy is going to be deported.
He is a domestic violence perp.

And look, I get they want to sing his praises after he tried to disarm one of the two killers on that day. He was shot by police and attacked by bystanders who mistook him for being a terrorist.
Under normal circumstances, most of us would be outraged that such a stand-up guy is on the verge of being kicked out of the country – to Iran.

But in this rush to white-wash his reputation, the journalists have conveniently forgotten it seems to explain that Australia is knee-deep in a war on women and men like AB are the problem.
We lose at least one woman every four days to male violence in Australia. At least one-third of women will experience some form of abuse in their lives – many will experience in multiple times.
Male violence is epidemic – and the national broadcaster is going in to bat for a man who assaulted, stalked and intimidated one partner. And these are the only offences on record. Violence does not happen in a vacuum – I am guessing there’s a lot abuse that authorities do not know about.
The ABC has every right to run a story on his situation but the headline, the fact the domestic violence is buried so deep and no context or sector professional input into the story means this is just shoddy journalism. A fancier version of the Daily Mail.
