If only the courts protected women like they protect men.
A Melbourne man has just been convicted on two counts of rape and one of sexual assault.
The jury handed down its verdict today in the Melbourne County Court.
The man has had a cloak of anonymity for three years now as he used his money and power to convince the legal system to protect him.
He is now headed to jail – and still the court will not let me show you his face.
This man has close ties to a major football club, ongoing professional and paid connections with sports and entertainment celebrities and is known to invest in property.
He was charged in 2023 and the suppression order – similar to the one used to protect rapist Tom Silvagni – was rolled out.
That order was to lift when the verdicts were handed down today but his lawyers swayed the judge into keeping his name on the downlow for longer.
Media outlets are trying to get the suppression order lifted.
He raped the woman in 2023 after spending months harassing her sexually.
He attacked her after she became distressed while telling him of a relationship breakdown, the Herald Sun reports.
She rejected his advances so he raped her.
She punched him in the face.
Needless to say, the defence demeaned the victim and they were successful in having some DNA evidence thrown out.
The man will be sentenced on a later date.
