JUSTICE FOR TALON

JUSTICE FOR TALON

Six years ago, an eight-month-old baby girl died from traumatic injuries at her home in Frankston, Victoria.

She’s the little girl authorities refused to tell the media or the community about.

She’s the little girl whose death investigation has stagnated in the corridors of Victoria Police.

She’s the little girl whose mum cries every night.

She’s the little girl denied justice.

Her name is Talon Jai-Grace Hehir. She was injured critically at her home in Frankston on June 20, 2019.

Child Protection officers told Talon’s mum, Kayla Hehir, her daughter’s injuries were due to being shaken.

The only adults in the home were Kayla and Talon’s father. He left the home shortly after Talon died.

The Victorian Homicide Squad has been investigating Talon’s death all this time – no one has been charged, her death was never publicised and detectives are unable to give Kayla  any answers about what happened to her daughter.

An inquest has not been held.

Kayla doesn’t even have a death certificate.

Today, The RED HEART Campaign and Australian Femicide Watch are launching the Justice for Talon Campaign on behalf of Kayla and her family.

We are calling on the Victorian Attorney-General Sonya Kilkenny, the Victorian Minister for Prevention of Family Violence Vicki Ward, the Victorian Police and Victims Minister Anthony Carbines and the Victorian Police Chief Commissioner Mike Bush to:

  • Appoint a coronial inquest;
  • Roll out a significant reward for information about Talon’s death; and
  • Ensure the homicide investigation into Talon’s death becomes a key priority.

“It’s been six years, and my family is still left with nothing but pain and no answers,” Kayla says.

“Why haven’t we been given set-in-stone answers?

“We deserve that, at the very least — she had her whole life ahead of her. How can her life mean so little that justice still hasn’t been done?

I want to know that her life mattered — that her death wasn’t dismissed or forgotten.

“Despite the gravity of this case, I feel that key issues remain unresolved, and communication from the relevant authorities has been limited.

“As her mother, I am left not only grieving but also fighting for accountability and justice for my daughter.”
