CW: This post contains images and names of two Aboriginal girls killed by a man.

For 37 years, their families have fought for justice.
Finally, authorities are listening!
Mona Lisa Smith and her cousin Jacinta (Cindy) Rose Smith were killed by sexual predator Alexander Ian Grant in December of 1987 near Bourke, NSW.
They died when his vehicle crashed.
Police found him with his arm across Cindy’s body. Her clothing had been almost removed.
He was charged with sexually interfering with Cindy, but the charge was withdrawn.
He avoided prosecution because it was unknown whether Cindy was dying at the time of his assault or if she had already passed away.
Grant was charged with dangerous driving causing death. He told the jury Mona was driving. They acquitted him.
He was never jailed for killing Cindy and Mona.
A coroner ruled Grant abused Cindy post-death and he lied about who was driving the vehicle.
The coroner found police racism and an “inexplicably deficient” investigation into their deaths meant the killer got off scot free.
Since their deaths, the families of Cindy and Mona have been fighting for justice.
Today their dedication and bravery will see a law changed to ensure sexual predators are held to account.
The New South Wales Parliament is expected to close a legal loophole that allowed offenders who committed acts of sexual violence, or who indecently interfered with a body – when the time of death was unknown – to avoid prosecution.
The new law will be called Cindy’s Law!
