Something horrific happened to this little girl six years ago.
Today, her mum is speaking for the first time, hoping to find justice for her daughter.
Her name is Talon Jai-Grace Hehir. She suffered catastrophic injuries at her home in Frankston on June 20, 2019.
The only other adult at the home was a man, who cannot yet be identified.
Monash Children’s Hospital medics did everything they could to save Talon, but she passed away that evening surrounded by those who love her.
The Victorian Homicide Squad is investigating her death.
No one has been charged and detectives are unable to give Kayla any answers about her daughter.
An inquest has not been held.
Kayla doesn’t even have a death certificate.
Talon’s death was never revealed publicly by police.
By day, Kayla keeps a brave front for her other children, but she cries herself to sleep.
“Talon is missing from every part of my life—from the lives of her siblings, from our family as a whole,” she says.
“There isn’t a day that passes where her absence doesn’t echo through everything we do.
“It’s in the quiet mornings, the birthdays, the milestones she should be hitting.
“She should be here for all of it.”
Talon was born into a world of love. She was adored by her brother and sister, cherished by her grandmother and loved deeply by her mum.
“She was a bright, peaceful little soul,” Kayla says.
“Always happy, calm, and full of smiles.
“Compared to my older babies, she barely cried — only when she wasn’t well or when her gums were sore. She brought such a sense of peace into my life.
“She was hitting all her milestones right on time, and her love for her siblings was so clear — the joy she expressed in their presence was unmistakable.”
No parent should ever have to bury their child. But when they do face this trauma, the least authorities can provide is certainty, closure and some form of justice.
Forcing Talon’s family to wait six years without a movement in her case is beyond abhorrent. The not-knowing is worse than any outcome of the investigation.
“I’ve spent six years waiting for answers, clinging to hope that someone, somewhere, would finally give us something solid — something real,” Kayla says.
“I’m terrified that day may never come. And it’s not just about me — it’s about her siblings too. I have three children growing up without their sister, and I don’t know how to explain why no one will give us the truth.”
Kayla fears Talon’s short life and horrific death will fall by the wayside.
“We need answers. We deserve them,” she says.
“The fear that we’ll never get them weighs on me every day — the fear that her life will be overlooked by the very systems meant to protect her. But I will not stop speaking.
“Because Talon mattered. She still does. And she deserves to be remembered — fully, truthfully, and with justice.”
Today, The RED HEART Campaign and Australian Femicide Watch are launching the Justice for Talon Campaign on behalf of Kayla and her family.
The hope is to have an inquest held into Talon’s death, a Victoria Police reward for information and for police to prioritise the investigation.
