She’s an activist, an actor, a fashion icon, a mother … Jane Fonda is also a survivor of rape and child abuse. She’s an activist, an actor, a fashion icon, a mother … Jane Fonda is also a survivor of rape and child abuse.
Jane’s mum Francis Ford Seymour died by suicide when she was 12. Francis had survived rape and abuse.
Jane grew up surrounded by men who used her body and demanded she succumb to them.
“There’s so many things that kids are being harmed by today – when they rise up and protest, it really, really, really makes a difference.”
Jane’s been a huge star since the 1960s. While many refused to make waves, she put herself and her career on the line for human rights.
She’s been arrested for protesting wars, protesting climate change and for standing for women’s, queer and Indigenous people’s rights.
She was nicknamed Hanoi Jane for going to Vietnam to protest America’s invasion there.
All profits from her best-selling fitness videos funded her campaign to end economic inequality.
In 9 to 5, alongside Dolly Parton, and Lily Tomlin, she highlighted sexual harassment, unequal pay and inadequate childcare.
Jane co-produced and starred in China Syndrome, a film about a reporter who discovers a corrupt nuclear power plant covering up a variety of safety hazards.
Jane is a key part of the V-Day movement which works to end violence against women and girls.
She helped start the Hollywood Women’s Political Committee, she runs the Jane Fonda Center for Adolescent Reproductive Health and she is a co-founder of the Women’s Media Center.
While everything about her activism is feminist focused, it actually took her years to become comfortable calling herself one.
Jane is 87 and she is still front and centre of human rights campaigns – and she is still being arrested and charged.
