Her name is Athena Georgopoulos and she was five months pregnant when a violent man decided to murder her. That man also killed (allegedly) Athena’s partner Andrew Gunn. Her unborn baby could not be saved, so he stole three lives.
Their bodies were found on August 11 at their home in Mount Waverley, Victoria.
A man known to them has been charged.
Athena is the 44th Australian woman killed this year and the 148th Australian woman lost to violence since January 1, 2024. She is the 14th Victorian woman killed since the start of the year – more than one-third of women killed these past 8.5 months were in Victoria.
Media are salivating over the horrific allegations that emerged just hours after Athena and Andrew’s bodies were found.
I won’t be mentioning them in this post.
What I will be talking about is 39-year-old Athena’s joy at expecting her baby daughter and the loss her mum in particular faces – not only is Athena’s mother now without her primary carer – she’s been deprived of a relationship with her grandchild.
Her aunt told a media outlet the proud mum-to-be and her partner had been together for three years and their baby marked the start of a new chapter in their lives.
She says Athena was exceedingly happy the last time they spoke – just nights before they were killed.
“She was so looking forward to having a baby, because she was 39 and she never thought she could have one,” her aunty says.
Athena, you are so-much more than salacious click-bait headlines. You are a woman who matters. Your family matters.
