❤️SHE MATTERS: ANU KUMAR! ❤️
Her name is Anu Kumar. She is 32 years old. She has two children, both little boys. She lived with multiple sclerosis. She was a victim of ongoing domestic violence perpetrated by her former partner. Her neighbours often pleaded with authorities for them to help Anu – they would hear thumping, crying and screaming. Help rarely came. Now she is dead, allegedly murdered by the man who had terrorised her for so long.
Anu, whose last name is not known, was killed in her home at Cobram, Victoria, on Tuesday. She is the 46th of 47 Australian women killed this year and the 150th of 152 women killed since January 1, 2024.
A number of people with information about Anu’s death have confirmed the region is struggling under the weight of violence and the lack of funding to ensure enough support is available. When I say authorities failed a woman it is not directed at our frontline domestic and family violence workers – they are doing the heavy lifting but the government keeps cutting the funding and that weight gets more enormous every day.
After killing Anu (allegedly), Prem Kumar filmed multiple videos with her children. Her body lay nearby as he told them to tell the world they were safe and to repeatedly say they were warriors. They were never safe.
They will never be safe because losing their mum to violence will shadow their footsteps for the rest of their lives. And one day, their alleged killer (should he be convicted) will walk from prison. Who knows what he will do then.
Again, a woman killed. A woman’s life story almost unknown. I cannot tell you more than I have, but she matters.
