She rose from her bed that morning. She gave her four children their breakfast. She dressed them and made their lunch. She walked them to school. She kissed them goodbye. She came home.
He forced his way into her home and murdered her in the backyard.

It was his final act in an eight-year terror campaign that deprived her of peace and security.
Her name is Czarina (Toots) Gatbonton Tumaliuan. Jessie James Tumaliuan murdered Czarina at her home in Werribee, Victoria, on March 27, 2025. She was only 42.
Czarina was the 16th of 79 Australian women killed last year.
The headlines in the immediate aftermath of her death did not focus on Czarina or the life she lived. They focused instead on the school opposite her home – somehow, parents being confronted with police tape and detectives in the frontyard was more important than the fact a man had murdered his former partner after abusing her for years.
Tumaliuan was convicted on a charge of murder and was sentenced to 26 years. He will be eligible for parole after 20 years and will be deported to the Philippines.
Czarina did everything women are told to do – she went to police, intervention orders were made to protect her and the children.
Over the eight years before he killed Czarina, he repeatedly assaulted her and he continuously breached court orders.
He should not have been allowed to stay in Australia. At the very least he should not have been on bail.
Once again the legal system let a violent man slip through the net and Czarina paid the price.
