Already the media are framing Brooke Stephens’ alleged killer as someone to sympathise with, running headlines proclaiming ‘Partner sobs in court’.
Jorden Turney allegedly killed Brooke on Sunday at Clyde North, Victoria. Brooke is the 42nd Australian woman killed this year and the fourth woman lost to violence in a matter of days. Last year we lost 79 women to violence – the year before 106 women were killed.

When Turney fronted court yesterday, multiple journalists framed their sells around his tears.
Even when they know a man has a history of ongoing domestic violence, even when he leaves two children without a mum, even when he murders a woman – they always find a way to humanise him.
“Brooke had her whole life ahead of her and deserved the chance to watch her children grow and experience all the beautiful moments still to come,” her family says.
“She was a devoted mother whose children were her whole world, a much-loved daughter and sister, and an incredible aunty who adored her family deeply. Brooke had a huge passion for basketball and especially loved coaching.
“She gave so much of her time and heart to the sport and to the people she coached, encouraging and supporting those around her.”
