“We’ve never had the chance to meet her, make memories with her, or experience the love and guidance that every grandchild deserves.”
These are the words of Hayriye Yaman who desperately wants the man who murdered her nan – Dianne Mary Angwin – to be held to account.
A man stabbed Dianne to death at her home in Bowen, Queensland, on December 2, 1997.
Diane was seen the evening before at the Bowen Bowls Club with her friend Edith Edie Lay.
A man woke Edie by holding a knife to her throat.
Diane saw the man and started running away. He killed her and left the scene.
Edie found Diane injured and police were contacted. Edie knew the man but did not tell investigators this at the time.
“Police have identified witnesses who Edie confided in, confirming that she did know the identity of the man and that had not told police at the time of the offence as she was scared for her own safety,” Detective Senior Sergeant Tara Kentwell says.
That man was interviewed but was never considered a formal suspect. Detectives plan to interview him again.
They are calling on anyone with information to come forward.
A $500,000 reward has just been announced.
Police said they also want to speak to anyone who knew about Diane’s relationship a local man who was married to another woman. He had also been seen at her home.
“We believe this information was known to members of the Bowen community, including family members of the man, and we would encourage those persons to contact police,” Detective Kentwell says.
Hayriye said her family needs to know who killed her grandmother and why.
“Not knowing what happened to her has left our family with years of unanswered questions and heartbreak,” she says.
