‘When Djuarn was around, you knew she was here’.
Police were in contact with Djuarn (DJ) Baker-Adams before she was murdered at a home in Slacks Creek, Queensland.
Her pleas for help and support were not answered, Djuarn’s mum Patrice Power told a media outlet.
Djuarn was killed on August 12.
Her partner Ronald Cora is charged with murder.
Djuarn is the 45th Australian woman killed this year. Last year we lost 79 women to violence – the year before 106 women were killed.
Police have confirmed Djuarn spoke to them in the 10 days before her murder.
Patrice said authorities knew Djuarn was facing significant safety concerns and they should have done more to keep her daughter safe.
Qld has one of the country’s worst responses to domestic violence. This is magnified when Aboriginal women are at risk.
The dedicated domestic violence policing unit is gone and funding for support services has been slashed.
“She was a very caring, loving, individual person,” Patrice said.
“When Djuarn was around, you knew she was here.
“She knew what she wanted in life and she was also very loving, forgiving and giving.
“She would help anyone out.”
