Victoria and Queensland have the highest rates of femicides in Australia – with both states on 12 women lost to violence each.
In Victoria, the latest victim is a 41-year-old woman who required NDIS supports.
George Paraskevas allegedly murdered the woman at her home in Bacchus Marsh on August 26. He was charged some days later and is now on remand.
The as-yet unnamed woman is the 47th of 49 Australian women killed this year. Last year we lost 79 women to violence – the year before 106 women were killed.
It is understood the woman required a carer and Paraskevas was that person. It is not known if he is related to the victim but there’s no doubt she was vulnerable.
Women with disability are at higher risk of violence by their family members and/or their carers than other women.
Also this past week, an 85-year-old woman was murdered in Tasmania, allegedly by her 55-year-old son who was her full-time carer.
Often these victims are forgotten by anti-violence activists and media outlets. They are most likely to be the victims you never hear about but their lives matter as much as anyone else’s.
