Cassius Turvey was a gentle giant – a proud Noongar Yamatji lad with a ready smile and a deep love for his family, friends and community.
They expected him to lead one day.
Four people hunted down and brutalised Cassius on October 13, 2022.
He died on October 23 – 10 days after he was beaten by a violent man wielding a metal pole.
Two men have just been found guilty of Cassius’ murder.
The main offender was “hunting for kids” because somebody had smashed his car windows.
Another man was found guilty of manslaughter. A woman was acquitted over the attack on Cassius.
In the wake of Cassius’ murder there were rallies and protests across Australia.
Leading the uprising was Cassius’ mum Mechelle Turvey.
“My son died for absolutely nothing,” she said this afternoon after the verdicts were handed down.
“He had nothing to do with smashing … car windows.
“His life was taken.
“He was hunted down by these four people.
“Fifteen years of age, my son was.
“He has finally got justice.”
Aunty Mechelle has dedicated her life fighting for systemic change since her son’s death.
“In my heart, everything I do now is for Cassius,” she says.
“In my ears, I hear him saying what he would always say: ‘Mumma’s on a mission’.”
CASSIUS TURVEY WILL BE FOREVER 15! ❤️
