❤️SHE MATTERS: ANASEINI WAQAVUKI!❤️
‘Known to police’: How often do we read these words when a man kills a woman?
‘Love triangle twist’: How often do we read these words when a man kills a woman?
‘She was starting a new life’: How often do we read these words when a man kills a woman?
A man is charged with murdering 38-year-old Anaseini Waqavuki and her 30-year-old friend on December 28 at Quakers Hill, NSW. He is Anaseini’s former partner.
Anaseini is the 10th woman killed in December, the 73rd Australian woman killed this year and the 178th woman killed since January 1 of 2024.
A proud Fijian-Australian, Anaseini was living her best life with her family, her friends and her community.
He murdered Anaseini because he didn’t want her to have a life away from his control. The media have been running the ‘love triangle twist’ for almost 24 hours now.
She deserved to lead her life her own way. To move on from a relationship. To be free of domestic violence and trauma. To be safe in her own home. To be safe anywhere. To live.
We all deserve this – but somehow this does not translate.
Now, a community is mourning Anaseini and her partner.
Again, we see a failure in the system where police knew the former partner was violent.
Again, we see that statistically known truth realised – the one where a woman’s biggest risk of being murdered is before, during or after separation.
Again, we see unethical media outlets chasing clicks with victim-blaming headlines like ‘love triangle twist’. For clarity: She was not in a relationship with the other victim – they were mates. But regardless, when a man breaks into a former partner’s house and repeatedly stabs her until she dies, this is not a fucking love triangle. It is an act of control by a man whom neither victim loved.
ANASEINI WAQAVUKI MATTERS!❤️
