In the days after Chamindika Jayawardena’s murder, multiple woman contacted me to tell their stories of domestic violence survival. The man they were speaking of is the same man who ended Chami Jay’s life.
He shot her to death on the eve of her 47th birthday, using a gun he should never have been allowed to have.
He murdered Chami in her home at Hernes Oak, Victoria, on February 28. Then he ended his own life.
Chami is the 12th of 32 Australian women killed this year. Last year we lost 79 women to violence – the year before 106 women were killed.
He had a history of abusing women and mental health concerns yet he was able to get a gun permit.
Chami’s brother Kalana is contemplating a campaign to curtail violent people getting guns.
“I found out he always kept a loaded gun in the master bedroom closet,” Kalana told a media outlet.
“Police need to do more vigorous unannounced site visits to see whether people who are holding gun licences are obeying the rules.
“They need to have psychiatric evaluation at least once a year for people issued gun permits.”
Kalana and his family deeply miss Chami, a woman with dreams and hopes for change.
“She’d talk to anybody and help them in any way possible she could, whether it was money or if they had trouble at a friend level she’d do that too,” he said.
“She had been like family to all her friends.
“She wanted to start an orphanage. I’m going to fulfil that dream one day.”
