Elaine Gee was just going for a drive. Now her husband and little boys face a lifetime without her because a man decided to be violent and reckless. Elaine died in hospital days after a man drove his vehicle into hers at Legana, Tasmania on July 24. He killed himself. Elaine is the 41st of 42 Australian women killed this year. Last year we lost 79 women to violence – the year before 106 women were killed.

Elaine may not have been the direct target of this man’s violence but she is very much a victim of his violence.
Shortly before driving into Elaine’s car, the repeat domestic violence offender stabbed a woman in Exeter. She suffered critical injuries and remains in hospital.
This is the complexity of violence in Australia – not every victim knows their killer and not every journey leading up to his actions are linear.
Elaine, a nurse at Launceston General Hospital, leaves behind a husband who loves her dearly and two sons whom adored and worshipped her.
“There are no clever words for it,” Rodney Gee wrote in a tribute to his wife.
“This entire situation is just completely unacceptable, unfair and crap.
“So please, it is going to take all of us … to help me make the good boys we have raised together become the great men she knew they could be.”
