❤️THEY MATTER: ERICA COYNE AND LLOYD MITCHELL!❤️
CW Discusses the murder of two Aboriginal people
She was an ‘independent little lady’ whose home was her safe space.
Erica Coyne was murdered at Spencer Park, Western Australia, on February 8. Her son Lloyd Mitchell was critically injured and died in hospital.
Their killer has not yet been caught by police.
Erica is the 8th of 12 women killed this year – and the fifth Aboriginal woman lost to violence in 2026. Last year 78 Australian women were killed and 106 women were killed in 2024.
Erica’s niece Jenelle said her aunt was deeply independent, she loved her life and lived to the full.
“Those who knew Erica, they knew that she was a loving, kind person, and her home was her safe place,” she said.
“It is really tragic that something has happened in a place where she felt that she should be safe.
“She was a home person. She loved gardening. She loved collecting little trinkets,” she said.
“She came across as a quiet little person, but she had a sense of humour, and if there was something that she needed to say, that she would say it, but she was never rude and disrespectful to anyone.
Erica is mum to four children and has many grandchildren.
“She just was a beautiful, beautiful aunty,” Jenelle said.
Lloyd shared the home with Erica. Jenelle said he was adored by everyone and was respectful and loving.
“I just miss them both, and just can’t believe that something like this has happened to them,” she said.
