Media are running more stories about Donald Trump and Elon Musk than they are about Irene Herzel.
Irene is the 13th Australian woman killed this year and the 114th woman killed since January 1, 2024.
Irene was found on Tuesday at her home in Blackburn South, Victoria, with multiple stab wounds.
Her daughter is charged with murder.
Police had attended to check on her welfare.
Irene’s name appears only a few times in Australian media.
She doesn’t even rate a mention on Victoria’s biggest media outlets.
The older we get the more invisible we become.
Irene is 78. She lived an amazing life and yet she gets so little attention in the media.
Probably, the first you’re hearing about her is by reading this post.
I’ve long raged about how journalists and many anti-violence activists fail to acknowledge the killing of older and elderly women.
First women are erased by killers and then they’re doubly erased by people who really should know better.
Irene, along with the 12 other women killed this year and the 101 women killed last year, will be remembered and honoured at the 12 She Matters rallies across Australia on March 15.
Irene’s friend said she was spiritual and empathetic.
“She just had a beautiful heart and was a very deep and special soul,” she told a media outlet.
“I only saw her a few months ago … I went over to her house and we had a cuppa. She made me these beautiful love heart cakes. This has hit me quite hard.”
