Julia Brunsdon deserved respect and dignity in the wake of her femicide – but that was taken away by technology and by journalists.
There’s a plethora of AI and/or bot-based so-called ‘news sites’ across Facebook – and they are harvesting the femicide epidemic to produce graphic victim-blaming content.
It’s distressing to see these platforms victim blame and demean femicide victims.
It is also appalling to watch mainstream media continue to do the same. The Daily Mail has articles demeaning Julia, who was expecting her second baby.
Julia was murdered by her partner at her home in Charleville, Queensland on August 5. He ended his own life. Julia’s little daughter was at the home when he killed her.
Julia is the 43rd of 44 Australian women killed this year. Last year we lost 79 women to violence – the year before 106 women were killed.
“Julia was a lovely woman, she was quiet, always up for a laugh and a bit of banter, she was a very soft gentle woman,” a colleague told media.
“She was a bit of a homebody, she was always doing something to her home if it was in the yard or always buying too many plants, she was just a down-to-earth woman.”
