‘She had time for people that other people didn’t have time for’.
Kylee McHugh was the kind of person who made her friends feel loved and supported – the kind of person who never turned her back on people many disregard.
The 46-year-old woman died at her home in Belconnen, ACT, on May 18. She was found critically injured when emergency services responded to a fire at the unit. Despite their best attempts, paramedics were unable to revive Kylee.
Some 11 days after her death, ACT Police confirmed the Homicide Squad had taken carriage of the investigation into her death. Kylee is the 30th Australian woman killed this year. Last year we lost 79 women to violence – the year before 106 women were killed.
ACT Police were expected to charge a 37-year-old man with Kylee’s murder on September 8, 2026.
“She was generous, she had time for people that probably other people didn’t have time for. She was a good person,” a friend told media.
“When you’re feeling, at the end of the day, pretty shit, she could always pick you up.
“She was always busy … I’d say she didn’t take time to sit around and feel sorry for herself or worried about her own problems.”
