SHE MATTERS: LILIAN DONNELLY

❤️SHE MATTERS: LILIAN CATHERINE DONNELLY!❤️

Today a media outlet wrote a story about the murder of Lilian Catherine Donnelly – it centred around the hardships of the woman accused of killing the vulnerable 88-year-old.
Lilian was murdered at her home in Port Kennedy on Friday. The woman accused of killing her is her roommate.
Lilian is the 6th Australian woman killed this year.
Framing stories around the hardships of killers is par for the course for Australian media – and these stories are always extremely sympathetic to the person who committed the violence.
Lilian walked this earth for 88 years – in her lifetime she would have done many amazing things – and yet this outlet didn’t even try to tell us about her incredible life.
The killing of middle aged and older women is common across Australia – four of the six women killed this year are all aged over 50 and more than half the women killed last year were in the same age groups.
The stories of all women lost to violence are important and they need to be told ethically by media outlets.
Focusing on the sob stories of accused killers is shit and lazy journalism – it has no place in ending violence against women. It simply gives other people ammunition to blame women for their own murders.
We cannot change the story on violence if journalists don’t change how they report on the killing of women and how they portray the victims and the killers.
REST IN POWER LILIAN CATHERINE DONNELLY! ❤️
