❤️SHE MATTERS: MY HOA CUU!❤️
Slowly a picture is emerging of My Hoa Cuu.
The 49-year-old was murdered on January 28 at Eastern Beach Pavilion in Geelong, Victoria.
Simon Macaulay, 53, is charged. He was on bail for drug offences and serving a suspended sentence after abusing another woman.
Cuu is the sixth of 32 women killed this year. Last year we lost 79 women to violence and 106 women were killed in 2024.
Since Cuu’s death I’ve been digging, hoping to tell you a little of her story. This is what I know.
The Vietnamese-Australian videocaster lived in Springvale but moved to Geelong to escape an abuser.
“She told us that she had to leave Melbourne as her neighbour was giving her trouble,” a contact told me.
“She was sleeping rough at Eastern Beach on a park bench.
“She was very quiet and didn’t bother anyone.
“She had all her belongings with her – suitcases etc in a shopping trolley and a child’s stroller.
“She was given a hot drink by the cafe staff every day and she just sat by herself each morning having her drink.”
Macaulay pleaded guilty to multiple breaches of an intervention order in late 2024.
The judge suspended the sentence. Had he been sent to jail, Cuu would be alive.
Journalists focused their stories on the accused killer while reducing Cuu to the ‘homeless murder victim’.
The framing of reports were sympathetic to Macauley, complimented by multiple photos of him smiling into the camera.
Once again – a woman erased by a man. Her existence erased by the media.
