The media industry may have forgotten but his victims haven’t.
Radio presenter Chris Smith – a man with a history of sexual harassment toward women in the media industry – was applauded, praised and given a gong at the Mumbrella Australian Audio Awards in Sydney.
In one incident he exposed his genitals and asked his colleague ‘I wanna f* you’. Myself and some other women in the audience at the event were deeply shocked and angered as his name was called out and as industry insiders praised widely praised him. How quickly they forget that Smith was sacked by Sky News Australia and Nine Entertainment after he made lewd comments to multiple women and inappropriately touched more than one woman at an end-of-year event in December of 2022. At the time he was a presenter with 2GB and with Sky. “We were in that boardroom. We were all having drinks and relaxing, and I was in the middle of it all when Chris came lurching and swaying up to me, clearly already a bit drunk,” one of his victims told a media outlet at the time. “I’m paraphrasing here, but he said something along the lines of “I want to fk you.
“You’re fking hot”, and then I looked down, his pants zip is undone, and his p* is hanging out.”
It followed his suspension from the Macquarie Radio Network, where he harassed four female colleagues and groped one woman at a Christmas party in 2009.
Following the 2022 incident he blamed alcohol and mental health for his behavior.
He now works at the Super Radio Network for @2sm1269am – and it was for his hosting there that he was awarded last night.
Interestingly, there’s no way Mumbrella could not have known about his behaviour towards woman given they reported on his sacking in 2022 and the stories still appear on the company’s website.
