On June 10, a police officer decided to shower the car she was in with bullets. Hania did not survive. Members of her family were injured in this act of violence that local police say was a case of ‘mistaken identity’.
Hania is the 13th Australian child killed in 2026. A total of 27 children were killed in 2025.
Police say Hania’s alleged killer thought the vehicle belonged to two armed robbers and so he pulled the trigger. He is now police custody.
“She was a happy, bubbly, friendly girl who used to befriend people quite easily, and she was excited to come to school every day,” Hania’s school principal told Australia media.
Hania’s dad told Australian media the police account of Hania’s killing was wrong. Police claimed the armed robbers opened fire and the officer retaliated.
“Firing was started by police at first, not by thieves,” Adeel Ahmed said in an interview with SBS.
“The Crime Control Department personnel chased us and fired at us.
“They were chasing our car.
“I was driving and was able to dodge them by taking turns, therefore they left us, otherwise they would have murdered all of us.”
Abdel and Hania’s brother were injured but are now recovering.
“Australia expects there to be transparency and a proper investigation of these circumstances,” Prime Minister Anthony Albanese says.
HANIA AHMED MATTERS!❤️
