The Australian media’s worship of footballers continues, even when they’re found guilty of bashing women.
And so it is today – every media report regarding Neil Elvis (Nicky) Winmar features the words ‘AFL great’ or ‘AFL icon’.
A magistrate just convicted Winmar on three counts of unlawful assault and common law assault.
He was acquitted of a fourth charge of intentionally causing injury.
The victim told the Bendigo Magistrates’ Court she feared for life when he attacked her in May 2025 at Cohuna.
Winmar grabbed and twisted her arm, dragged her by her hair and smashed her head against a wooden door four times.
He claimed he was defending himself. However, the magistrate said the victim was honest and steadfast in her evidence.
Winmar’s barrister wants Winmar to serve a community corrections order instead of prison time.
Anyways, all the media reports are giving a nice little resume of Winmar’s sporting achievements.
