A bunch of racist and offensive banners were on show at a football game in Melbourne on the weekend.
One banner – held by children – read ‘Greek chicks hairy t*ts’. The images were posted by Konstantinos Kalymnios on Facebook. Konstantinos said the banners were displayed by @plfcofficial supporters during the South Melbourne FC v Preston Lions FC match yesterday (July 18). “The banners and symbols were directed at South Melbourne’s Greek identity and its Greek-Australian supporters,” Konstantinos wrote. “The most offensive banner contained the words ‘Greek chicks hairy t*ts’.
“The words were written in large lettering and were plainly intended to be read by South Melbourne supporters and other spectators.
“The banner combined an express reference to Greek ethnicity with a crude and degrading sexual statement about Greek women.
“It reduced Greek women to their bodies, attributed a humiliating physical stereotype to them and used that stereotype as a means of insulting the broader Greek community associated with South Melbourne FC.”
Preston Lions FC put a statement on the socials saying the club condemned the banners.
“These actions do not reflect our club or the vast majority of our supporters,” it said.
“Security measures were in place, and the banners were removed immediately.”
The club wants the people who displayed the banners to own up to their actions.
Meanwhile, maybe the fathers of the children involved can have a little chat to them about not growing into misogynists.
