Sanae Takaichi is Japan’s first female Prime Minister – she is an historic figure who leads one of the world’s biggest economies and populations.
Prime Minister Takaichi visited Australia in May and spent time with Prime Minister Anthony Albanese.
During the visit, she gifted him a pair of treasured Crown Melons from Shizuoka. These are the most prized fruit in Japan.
This gift was to mark Australia’s decision to reopen our market to Japanese melons.
For Japanese people, these are a special gift for someone to whom you want to bestow an honour. They are not to be laughed at.
A couple of months ago, Albanese appeared on Nikki Osborne’s Bush Deep Podcast – you probably remember him rating the attractiveness of three Australian women on this show.
Anyways, turns out he made a sexist gesture and remark about Prime Minister Takaichi and the melons she gifted him.
Osborne said the melons were like Pamela Anderson’s breasts.
Albanese smiled along while raising his hands to his chest and forming them into a cupping gesture, while saying: ‘She brought two. As you do’.
Everyone laughed along in the studio including Osborne.
Albanese later apologised for his ‘shag, marry, date’ joke and comments about Kylie Minogue but he did not apologise about his sexist actions towards Prime Minister Takaichi.
Had I have watched the entire interview with Osborne, I would have called this out sooner.
Here is a man who stands idly by while Pauline Hanson blames women for men’s violence against them and who laughs like a rabid horny schoolboy over the attractiveness of prominent women. So it comes as no surprise that he would reduce one of the world’s most powerful women to a pair of ‘melons’.
