The day before she killed her children and herself, Helena Wright attended Mt Gambier Police Station.
Less than two hours before her abandoned car was found at Port MacDonnell, police arrived at her home to check on her welfare.
South Australian police will not tell us why she went to police and why a welfare check was requested.
One thing is certain, there appears to have been at least one opportunity for police to have saved the lives of 23-month-old Hazel Wright and her brother, three-month-old Lewis.
Helena Wright also killed herself on July 27. Hazel and Lewis are the 18th and 19th children killed this year. Some 27 children were killed in 2025.
In every femicide and child homicide I document, there’s always one clear point in their lives where they could have been saved.
Interactions with police is a common theme. My research shows police responses are lacklustre across the country when women come to the front counter of a station.
Significant time will pass before we know exactly why Wright went to police. We can only hope there is no repeat of whatever mistakes happened on the day she asked for help.
