Jeff Spinner raped a woman in 2024. Thanks to his colleagues, Spinner’s sentence was significantly reduced.
A raft of people connect to this man lined up to provide glowing praise-worthy references for a man who raped a woman.
The West Australian reports the woman and Spinner were having drinks at a pub.
She became unwell and vomited a number of times. Spinner took her into his hotel room and left her in the shower to clean up.
She passed out and woke to him touching her. She repeatedly said no.
She was so scared she pretended to pass out again. He raped her repeatedly.
When she was able she went to her own room and called her mum to let her know what happened. She also attended the hospital.
Spinner was arrested and told police he no idea the victim was drunk despite CCTV showing him assisting her to walk to the hotel.
During the sentencing, the judge read a series of comments from character references. A number of them were written by colleagues and managers from his employer Western Power.
The comments included:
‘This situation is entirely out of character’.
‘Demonstrated trustworthiness, reliability and a strong moral compass’.
‘Conducted himself respectfully and appropriately’.
‘Respectful, reliable and considerate’.
‘A supportive mentor’.
‘A highly respected work colleague known for professionalism, integrity and strong work ethic’.
Western Power has stood down the people who made the references while it investigates.
Spinner was sentenced to five years with parole after three years. The sentence would have been harsher had those references no been provided to the court, the judge said.
