They should have been helping her celebrate turning 18. Instead they gathered to remember and mourn the cheeky, intelligent and kind girl with the radiant smile.
Her family ask us to call her T. Bukulatjp.
The 17-year-old was murdered in her home on July 6 in Galiwin’ku, Northern Territory. Her partner Jordan Garrawurra, 34, is charged over her death.
T. Bukulatjp is the 16th of 19 Australian children killed in 2026. A total of 27 children were killed in 2025.
This week, her family, friends joined community members at a special vigil in T. Bukulatjp’s honour.
They walked to the home T. Bukulatjp’s parents – they were met by happy birthday banners and candles.
Then they went to the place where T. Bukulatjp died, to reflect on what had happened there.
T. Bukulatjp’s Uncle Marcus was the one who suggested visiting the site because it was an opportunity for people to speak up and openly about violence.
‘She was very loving, kind, gentle, cheeky,” Uncle Marcus said of the niece he also called daughter.
“Coming from a Yolŋu (all male) family, this has really hurt my mum, T’s grandmother, because she never had daughters.”
Yalu Aboriginal Corporation chairperson Jasmine Yunupiŋu is T. Bukulatjp cousin.
“She was so kind, she was loving – I can still see her smile,” Aunty Jasmine said.
