Yvonne Weldon could have remained in the shadows but she chose to speak about her experience of child sexual assault publicly and to hold the man who allegedly abused her to account.
Mick Mundine – a high profile community leader in New South Wales – has just been charged with assault (committing an act of indecency) and sexual assault of a person under 16 years of age.
Yvonne is the woman who survived the alleged assaults some 40 years ago.
She is a councillor in the City of Sydney and has a remarkable career in politics, community leadership and social justice.
The 55-year-old Wiradjuri woman had every right to keep her identity secret but she chose to come forward to help other victim-survivors know there is hope.
“I have carried this for 40 years,” she wrote on her social media.
“It’s time to no longer carry it.
“I came forward for the children who are here now and to break the culture of silence that allows abuse to continue.
“To other survivors of abuse in its many forms, you are not alone.
“It is never to late to speak up and seek support.”
