Police dragged a 16-year-old Aboriginal mother from her home and chained her to a hospital bed based on fictitious claims her baby was at risk.
The girl’s family released a photo of her shackled to a hospital bed and spoke to the National Indigenous Times.
NIT reports WA Police leadership as saying the arresting officers were acting appropriately when they dragged her from the home and chained her up.
The teenager was arrested in Butler on October 19 following concerns about the welfare of her baby.
Police said the baby was found unharmed.
Joondalup Detectives charged the teenager with three offences after she became understandably distressed.
Her family told NIT the police threw the child against furniture and pulled her to the ground before dragging her away.
“She was getting changed. The baby was asleep,” her grandmother said.
“This is what it’s like for us as Aboriginal people.”
