A woman walked into a doctor’s office in October of 2022 for a cervical screening test.
During the examination the doctor told her: ‘I’ve seen a lot of vaginas and yours is really very nice’.
That man was Deepak Shadilal Puri. He also conducted a needless invasive examination of another woman when the woman came to his office for treatment of fevers, chills and headaches.
Puri has just been convicted on two charges of aggravated sexual intercourse without consent.
He is facing up to 20 years in jail but the sentencing has been delayed and he is on bail.
“I feel like life is now something that happens to me and not something I can influence,” the first victim told the NSW District Court.
“I have struggled with the gross betrayal – the broken trust of – a professional who used his position for his own gratification.”
Despite the convictions, Puri remains a registered medical practitioner with multiple media outlets saying he is still allowed to treat patients.
The NSW Medical Council was warned about Puri in October 2022 and looked into the allegations but initially decided to take no action, the Sydney Morning Herald reports.
His registration was eventually suspended but he appealed to the NSW Civil and Administrative Tribunal.
The tribunal decided he would only be banned from prescribing, consulting, examining, treating or performing any procedures on women or any patient under the age of 18, but he can continue seeing other patients.
He will be sentenced in December.
