She was doing her job when he choked her to death. Then he told authorities she consented. Now he’s running a cafe and living the life of a free man while her family and friends carry the burden of knowing there may never be a justice.

Her name is Jingai (Mimi) Zhang. She was killed by Tobias Pick in Launceston, Tasmania on December 26, 2020. She was only 49.
He was charged with murder but this was downgraded to manslaughter. He served 2.5 years behind bars for killing Mimi. He was deported to Germany in 2023 after finishing his parole period.
There’s been photos of him in the local media, cooking, eating with a friend, running his business.
Mimi was a sex worker. And if there is one thing clear from my work documenting femicide in Australia – women in this industry rarely get justice if they are murdered. The legal system treats sex workers like second-class citizens. Not worthy of murder convictions or life sentences.
Pick told authorities Mimi asked him to choke her. After killing Mimi, he stole her mobile phone and her money and hid from authorities for two days.
“Yes, she was a sex worker, but the fact was she was still a person, and everyone’s got the right to do what they want to do with their life,” her husband David Simmons told a media outlet.
He said she would never have asked – or consented – to this type of act.
“I’d known her for over 10 years and she’d never once said to me, ‘Oh, I like being choked’ – never once.
“What gives them the right to say her life was worth two and a half years.”
Other people who knew Mimi well came forward to tell authorities she’d never indicated a willingness for choking but it seems this was not enough.
At least one other woman has told authorities Pick was violent towards them.
Now Pick is being investigated by German authorities while he runs his business in that country.
German prosecutors can examine crimes committed by German nationals abroad to determine whether there are grounds for domestic proceedings. It could see him get a harsher sentence in that country – perhaps this is the only way Mimi will get justice.
“Things just went downhill (after her death) and we’ve suffered ever since, all because she was taken way before her time,” David said.
