Product Description

This RED HEART Tee is part of an ongoing special artist collaboration project between The RED HEART Campaign / Australian Femicide Watch and Australian artists. When you buy this t-shirt – and all of our other products – 100% of profits fund this vital work. Help change the story for Australian women and children. Their lives matter!

ABOUT THE ARTWORK:

Beau Pennefather Motlop’s The Warrior depicts a proud Indigenous woman defending women with her dingoes at heel. The dingo is a wild dog native to Australia. The animals were used by Aboriginal women as protection against men’s violence during White colonisation and oppression of First Nation’s people. Dingoes were used by Aboriginal male warriors at the time as part of guerrilla warfare tactics to defend their lands and selves from colonists. The image depicts a female Warrior ancestor who is letting her rage be known in regards to men’s violence against women. She has had enough and is ready to defend.   The circular motifs in the background are ancestor spirits supporting her as she fights.   Beau writes: “Why are our Grandmothers, Mothers, Aunties, Sisters, daughters and Nieces being killed? Where is the outrage? Why is it going almost unnoticed? This needs to stop.”

ABOUT THE ARTIST:

Beau Pennefather Motlop has lived in Cairns, Far North Queensland, since the age of eight. Beau’s heritage is Aboriginal from the Jirrabal tribe of the Surrounding Cairns region, Torres strait islander from the Wagedoegam tribe of Mabuiag Island and Ngapuhi from New Zealand. Beau’s Torres Strait Island Totems are Crocodile, Snake, Stonefish and Remora. Beau’s Aboriginal Totem is Dingo. Beau started to take art practice seriously in 2006 and began experimenting with various mediums including pencil, pastels and acrylic paint. Beau is primarily a digital artist who creates depth and dimensions with colours and size differences, using an abundance of detail and intricate patterns. Beau also likes to balance out the artwork with emptiness and quiet. Beau’s motifs and circular patterns are a unique combination drawn from Beau’s three Indigenous heritages.
